“Meuw-zings” about The Roice Hurst Cats by Kathy Pfeufer, Cat Photographer and Volunteer
Shirley is a people cat through and through. She is another brown tabby, but she has a white muzzle. She can be very persistent and will hang around waiting for treats. Watch where you step, since Shirley may be nearby. She is a good one for petting if you can be patient with her. I have not had her sit in my lap, but others may want to try. She seems attentive to people in general, and treats are appreciated.
Momma is the most recent tabby to Roice Hurst, and is still learning the “ropes” of dealing with her many roommates.

Chloe is a silver tabby with plenty of white
in an asymmetrical pattern. One front paw
is almost com-pletely white. She has pale yellow/green eyes, and is quite vocal. Sometimes she can whine and “moan”
to other cats who seem to get in her way, especially if you have something tasty she wants and she wants more! Her fur is wonderfully soft, but Chloe is not crazy about lots of petting. Once or twice is usually enough for her. She will readily come to people for treats, but is hesitant
as a lap cat. She is waiting for a special person to fuss over her forever!

A TALE of FOUR TABBIES
There are four very different brown and silver lady tabbies in residence at Roice Hurst now. When I’m there to take pictures, I have learned to make SURE which tabby is which, since they may LOOK similar, they have very different styles and personalities.
Ellie is a dark version of a brown tabby.
Lots of black, and stripes, and not much
white anywhere on her. She has always
been a shy, quiet, stay- in-the background
gal. If she is hungry, she will accept treats,
and I’ve seen her sit in my lap when she
is in the mood. She may, or may not, come
to visit humans on purpose, and can sleep
through a quiet afternoon if things are quiet
in the cat rooms You may need to co-ax
her out of some cozy soft place, but don’t
give up.

She has a lovely white neck fur collar, and a white streak on one side of her face. I have to make sure that if Momma is around to make sure she gets a couple treats, since newbies at Roice Hurst can be “pushed around” by other residents. It can take a couple weeks for new residents to assert themselves. Momma is still learning.
Tabbies may be so “typical” in terms of cat fur colors, but if you can take the time, even the typical tabbies will make special pets. Come visit them all.
Oh! Those “Golden” Tabbies
These cats have been called “Marmalade Cats”, Ginger Cats, and simply Orange Tabbies.
Most orange tabbies are usually males, but at the moment, Roice
Hurst has two lady ginger cats. These two gals have very different personalities.
MOCHA is a cat that has grown up from a teenage cat to an adult at Roice Hurst since I’ve been photographing the cats. (That’s summer 2010) Recently I had to look twice to make sure it was Mocha, since she had become quite the beautiful adult cat.
young enough and interested enough to come down
PHOEBE ( pronounced “fee-bee”) is a more recent addition to the Roice Hurst shelter and her behavior is typical of a well liked pet. She will allow some petting, and will even come to you if you have some
treats she is interested in.
She seems interested in people, but may not be so pleased with the interactions
of other cats in the cat room. Plan to be patient with Phoebe, and she will
probably come over to meet you. Just tell her how beautiful she is, and keep
talking to her quietly.
Mr. THAX, a big black and white male, has been at Roice Hurst for almost a year now. At first he would avoid me for photos by casually walking away, and always seemed to keep his eyes closed. But over time, and with
some tasty cat treats, he has finally come around to accepting me as someone who will always fuss over him with rubs and petting, let him rub my legs, and even eat treats off a lap!
He has always been a big quiet guy, perhaps a little tough to get to know, but as with some

of these large males, once Thax determined that I was someone he liked, he has been loyal. loyal. Mr. Thax will follow me from room to room, and has a longing look when I have to go into the other rooms on my visits. Thax is a senior cat at 11 years old. Older cats and dogs have an expecially difficult time in the shelter environment. The noise and constant commotion of cleaning and visitors is very stressful on the older pets.
Thax needs a peaceful, loving home in which to spend his golden years. If you can't adopt, would you consider fostering Thax? Roice-Hurst will provide food and medical expenses, should they become necessary.
